Essential Info

Annapurna Circuit with Annapurna Base Camp trek difficulty and altitude sickness

On the Annapurna Circuit with Annapurna Base Camp trek, you will cover over 200 kilometers. It is a long, challenging trek in the Annapurna region. We recommend this trekking program to those who are physically and mentally fit.

The journey is quite demanding, requiring 6 hours of walking daily, limited facilities, offbeat terrain, diverse climate, and high altitude. Trekkers can get sick and suffer from altitude sickness. You have to be careful not to sprain your ankle.

There is adventure and fun, but you have to be careful and attentive as well. Previous high altitude or trekking experience is a must. Apart from that, our itinerary provides ample rest days to acclimatize.

Follow the below advice to lower the risk of altitude sickness during the trek:

  • Two liters of water daily.
  • Ascend slowly and maintain your pace.
  • Listen to your body and inform your guide if you experience dizziness, vomiting, nausea, headache, difficulty breathing, insomnia, or loss of appetite. These could be early signs of altitude sickness.
  • Have ample food and get plenty of rest daily.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol during trekking.

Travel Insurance

Nepal does not have travel insurance provision for foreign trekkers, so you have to buy it in your country. There are many insurance providers out there where you can buy one. The two necessary coverages your travel insurance should have are medical bills and helicopter evacuation. You can add other coverages as well.

Permits

You will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card for the Annapurna Circuit with ABC trek. Both permits are available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Our team will obtain the permits on your behalf, saving you a few hours of leg work.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) permit cost: USD 30 per person
  • TIMS Card cost: USD 20 per person

The best time to do this trek

The best trekking times for Annapurna Circuit with Annapurna Base Camp are months from March to May (spring) and late September to November (autumn). These are peak trekking times, so the trails see many trekkers. If you want to avoid crowds, trek at the start or end of the season.

Other months have unfavorable weather and climate. Mountain views are unclear, and the trails are not in good condition. In winter, you may walk up to Annapurna Base Camp, but crossing Thorong La Pass may not be possible because it gets closed if the weather is too bad or the route is covered with unpassable snow.

Accommodation & food during the trek

Lodge accommodation is available for trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit with the Annapurna Base Camp route. Our package includes twin-shared rooms. Single rooms cost a few extra bucks, so you must inform us beforehand if you want a single room. Private washrooms are rare.

You will get a good variety of Nepali and Western dishes. From the typical dal bhat, thukpa, and momo to pizza, pasta, and burgers, the menu is available. In villages above 3,800 meters, the menu is quite limited to Nepali dishes.

  • Washroom: You will get Western-style toilets in many places. At higher elevations, there are squat toilets.
  • Services in the lodge: Charging is available everywhere. Lodges provide hot water in buckets for hot showers. Hot showers may not be possible at high elevations because of the cold. WiFi is available in the villages at low elevations. The network may not be stable. All these services cost extra money. You can expect to spend USD 2 to USD 7. Hot showers are expensive.
  • Drinking water: Trekkers drink boiled water provided by lodges. Use water purification tablets.
  • Snacks: Buy ample snacks in Kathmandu or Pokhara for the journey. Not many snack options are available along the trail, and they cost 5 to 10 times more than in the city.
